OMG! This. Just. Happened… The struggle is REAL when you have kids. At this very moment, I’m making green drinks for the entire family and my #TEENAGER walks in with this— a greasy bag of fast food! Yes, even “Nutritionist” kids are influenced by their peers and the multi-billion-dollar fast-food chains.
So, what’s a kale-munching mom to do? NOTHING!! Don’t be rude. Don’t flip out. Don’t yell or throw a fit. You will NEVER win your kids over to the “Healthy Side” being critical or harsh. So, if yelling is out, what do we do as parents trying to teach health to our kids?
HUMOR!! That’s right, we win them with kindness. Make light of the situation. For example, offer to trade them a kale leaf for a fry. Joke that your green smoothie or garden salad is better tasting. Then, once you have their attention, ever so LIGHTLY mention that food has the ability to HELP or HURT the body. Then, love them when they eat that fast food garbage anyway and make them drink a green drink after!
KINDNESS ALWAYS WINS WITH PEOPLE. Whether it’s your kids, your spouse or your parents. You must lead the way, not scream, yell or demand that they eat healthy. It will just annoy them and give you a headache! Teenagers especially do not respond well to judgment— heck, they get enough of that already from their peers. Instead, keep your cool, remain calm and stay focused on your own healthy journey. Your healthy example will be the light and will lead the way for the rest of your family.
Trust me, this works. My oldest son, Zander, who brought in this bag junk food, already knew by the healthy example of his parents that this was not a normal thing in our home. He joked that he was bringing in a bag of “abomination” to the kitchen. You see, he sees mom and dad eating healthy. He knows in his heart what’s going to bring life to his body. He gets it! And, I promise your family will “get it” too.
Parents, training up healthy eaters is hard.
Wives, getting your hubby to eat healthy is hard.
Husbands, getting your wife to join you in the gym is hard.
Everyone, staying strong and committed can be hard.
This is why surrounding yourself with a supportive community of like-minded individuals and leaders really helps. Together, we go through the everyday struggles, inspiring and encouraging one another. TOGETHER we are better.
Stay strong. Don’t flip out when your kids, spouse, coworkers, family or friends don’t want to follow your healthy lead. Just keep going and I promise that your example will shine brighter than those tempting Golden Arches of McDonalds!
Cheers to a healthy 2020!
