With major global concerns about the health of mankind in full force, it’s important to know the best natural ways to respond quickly, wisely and mindfully. After all, we have to take care not only of ourselves, our families and communities, but also each other on more civic and global scales. The health and wellness of mankind are literally in our hands.
To best navigate this global crisis, here’s my personal recommendation as a Board Certified Master Nutritionist to help guide you and your family. Keep in mind, all the information I’m sharing is backed by the CDC and is constantly evolving to consider new developments, expert research, and nutritional advice. This is not to replace your medical provider but to help you maintain your physical and mental well-being during this global crisis. As a Top 10 Master Nutritionist in America, I believe our greatest weapon against this viral outbreak is actually our ability to obtain and maintain wellness. So here’s my best wisdom to keep you and your family healthy during this time of peril.
3 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR IMMUNITY DURING A VIRAL OUTBREAK
1. LISTEN TO REAL EXPERTS, NOT HEARSAY FROM SOCIAL MEDIA.
I have to say it— misery loves company. As does drama, fear, anxiety and all the negative emotions that are running rampant for many. It’s crucial you know how to differentiate fact from fiction, and credible real sources versus unfounded opinions from scared friends, family, neighbors, and even the media. Be mindful of the sources from which you get your information, especially when it comes to your health. It’s not worth risking your health!
WHO TO LISTEN TO?
The best responsible resources to find ongoing developments in our current climate are the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Next, for updated local coverage and protocols in your area, look to official authoritative resources on the city, county, and state levels. Be sure to follow News Media outlets who are broadcasting actual information from the CDC.
Of course, you can always look to your preferred news outlet of choice. But have your filter up for what you entertain. Focus on wellness tips and health information from real CDC backed expert perspectives, rather than speculation. Simply put, due diligence is key.
2. CONTROL WHAT YOU CAN
While the story and responses still develop, there are countless ways to get proactive. You can protect your own immunity and well-being—as well as that of others—by adhering to the following best practices.
NUTRITION
Your food choices are one of the greatest determining factors for overall health. In addition to following a balanced diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, you can add more immune-boosting foods to your next grocery haul.
Detox your gut and body with a daily detox of your liver, kidneys, and bloodstream where viral infections will attack your immune system. You’ll benefit from detoxing your body of toxins while warding off the bad viral invaders, thus bolstering antibody levels and your immune response.
Add more vitamin B and amino acids daily to strengthen your immune system. (Additionally, vitamin B can help reduce the severity of cold symptoms, while amino acids can boost your mood.)
CREATE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
We all know to wash your hands correctly, and often, to stop harmful pathogens in their tracks. Keep hand sanitizer with you for settings in which a sink and soap are unavailable. Wipe down commonly touched surfaces (phones, computers, doorknobs, desks, etc.) with an alcohol-based solution.
Avoid large gatherings and public spaces as best you can. (Your area may already or eventually cap social gatherings at a certain size. Follow the mandated guidelines as they develop.) Work from home if your job permits doing so. Visit your doctor to receive a proper diagnosis and protocol if you’re feeling under the weather. After, stay home until you fully recover.
3. STAY CALM + DON’T FEED INTO THE FRENZY
Truth be told, it’s natural to be concerned about your own health and that of your loved ones. However, it’s another situation entirely to worry yourself sick and pay mind to worst-case scenarios. After all, stress is proven to weaken your immune system by lowering the production of white blood cells that protect against antigens (harmful foreign bodies). Thus, it’s essential to remain calm while staying informed.
With that said, at the time being, experts have put forth the following notices:
- Don’t buy face masks for everyday use. Shortages compromise availability to health workers who need them most to actually help treat and contain the spread of disease.
- Don’t feel the need to buy provisions in extreme excess (hand sanitizer, water, toilet paper, canned goods, etc.). Authorities confirm that while stocks may be temporarily low, supply chains are strong and there’s plenty of food in the country. Get what you need to feel comfortable, yet be considerate of others in more compromised conditions.
At the same time, there are a number of helpful ways to reduce stress and stay positive:
- Stick to healthy routines, whether it’s cooking nutritious meals, following online fitness programs, or de-stressing with yoga.
- Meditate and practice gratitude to unwind and keep things in perspective.
- Relieve tension by unblocking pressure points.
- Read your favorite book, learn something new, or start spring cleaning to make the most of your time at home.
- Make sure you’re resting and sleeping at least 8 hours per night. Rest will allow your body to detox of viral invaders and heal. If you’re having trouble sleeping try adding a nightly melatonin supplement.
FINAL THOUGHTS
All things considered, the adage “to be forewarned is forearmed” rings especially true at present. Stay calm yet informed to best protect your own immunity as well as that of others, all the while taking proactive measures in your nutrition and lifestyle.
Stay calm. Stay strong. Stay focused on wellness.
